The North Rhine-Westphalia police have a state equestrian squadron in Bochum with 32 service horses and 42 police riders. The state equestrian squadron is used in particular for operations on special occasions such as soccer matches, demonstrations and large gatherings. Due to their agility, speed and size, they are effective, for example, in separating and escorting groups of troublemakers as well as clearing and keeping areas clear.
Service horses not only command respect, they are also popular on public patrols. Police service horses have strong nerves and enjoy intensive training, which prepares them for police operations and keeps them ready for action.
The North Rhine-Westphalia police are also happy to take on new service horses, depending on current requirements. Service horses (geldings only) must have a minimum height of 1.68 meters and be between four and eight years old. A good-natured and strong-nerved character is an advantage.
